Medical Detection Dogs trains specialist assistance dogs to help save the lives of people with medical conditions such as type 1 diabetes and Addison’s disease. The charity’s first achievement was successfully training dogs to sniff out cancer in human urine samples.

Bryony, the director of The Pet Nurse, is a Registered and Qualified Vet Nurse who is also training to become an animal behaviourist and, with Jackie, organises our weekly walk in St Neots.

Professional Dog Walking and Mobile Pet Care are the main focus of The Pet Nurse however the other unique services are offered such as Mobile Veterinary Nursing and One-on-One dog training. This makes The Pet Nurse much more than Pet Sitting and helps to ensure your unique Pet Care Needs for your pets. Bryony started off providing these services in St Neots only and is now dipping her paws in different locations!

Bryony currently owns ‘Katie’ 13 year old Whippet, 'Pacha' a 3 year old Dogue de Bordeaux, her son 'Doodles' who is 10 months old and 'lunabelle bunny' the rabbit!

Today we’ve asked Bryony to take over our blog…..

“The concept of running an animal services business in the St Neots area had been at the back of my mind for some while.  The Pet Nurse has taken off so well that I’m now employing Sitters around the Cambridgeshire area and further afield.

I also co-coordinate Big Walkies Weekly Walk in St Neots with Jackie and love meeting people and their dogs. I try to make as many other Big Walkies and recently went to the St Ives one with Katie, Pacha and Doodles. They loved it as much as I did!

Working with animals is a joy and I love it. You could fulfil your dreams too, or earn a little extra spending money.

I’m looking for others to become Pet Sitters and Dog Walkers in areas around St Neots and further afield if you wish!

You would be fully covered with my insurance and would be paid at the end of your Sit/Walks. I take a minimal amount as a booking fee. The only thing you are advised to do is registered as self employed.

If you would be interested in Pet Sitting or Dog Walking for The Pet Nurse in your area, please contact me www.the-pet-nurse.co.uk or call  on: 07754 269810”

Medical Detection Dogs trains specialist assistance dogs to help save the lives of people with medical conditions such as type 1 diabetes and Addison’s disease. The charity’s first achievement was successfully training dogs to sniff out cancer in human urine samples.

The charity would like to help more people with life threatening and disabling medical conditions, but can only do so through continued financial support from the public.

One way to be seen is to purchase a LEUCHTIE LED collar. LEUCHTIE LED light collars provide a constant light source to ensure optimal visibility from dusk to dawn in all weather conditions. If your purchase a LEUCHTIE LED collar from Collarways and your dog is wearing it on the Walk in the Dark, Collarways will donate £1 to the total fundraising pot for Medical Dogs. Click here to purchase your LEUCHTIE LED collar.

There is a 50 per cent increase in road accidents involving dogs during the winter months and many of these could be easily avoided if dogs were more visible to road users.

We will shortly make downloadable event packs available here. In the meantime if you're interested in organising a walk in your area, please contact Collarways.

Cambridgeshire Police have given the following advice in regards to safety in the dark:
  • Take a torch
  • Take a mobile phone for emergencies
  • Always tell someone where you are going and when you will be back
  • Try not to go alone
  • Avoid secluded areas
  • Wear high visibility clothing if walking near a road
  • Use paths, rather than walking on the road.
  • Walk facing traffic so you can see and react to vehicles.
  • Use extra caution when crossing streets. Drivers do not expect pedestrians to be out walking at night.
  • Use the same routes used by other walkers and runners.
  • Beware of trip hazards.
  • Don't be blinded by the light. Headlights can make it difficult for you to see for a while.
  • Don’t wear earphones or listen to music. These can be a target for criminals or prevent you from being alerted to oncoming danger.
Cambridgeshire Police will be attending the event.

International Agility Festival - details

A particular attraction of the annual Festival is that it is open to any dog, as long as it is registered on one of the Kennel Club’s registers - Breed or Activity - making it one of the few world-class agility competitions to be open to pedigrees, rescue dogs and crossbreeds alike.

The Festival always includes graded classes for all height categories and all grades of agility dog and handler, so that everyone gets a chance to compete at their own level at the UK's largest agility show. With a series of cup classes for all levels - the Starters Cup, Novice Cup, British Open and Nations Cup - as well as special classes for younger handlers and YKC members, there are many opportunities for the best performing dogs to secure a place at Crufts or at Discover Dogs

For the past two years the Festival has been fortunate to have  principal sponsorship from PRO PLAN, a complete, high quality dry food. Lorna Winter, Senior Brand Manager for PRO PLAN, says: “We are delighted that we are able to take an active role in supporting dogs of all shapes and sizes and to help the Kennel Club promote happy, healthy dogs. We feel agility is a great way for dogs and owners to share their unique bond and have fun together, whilst helping to keep both fit and healthy”.

The Festival has space for over 700 camping units, so virtually all competitors are able to spend the three-day weekend camping or caravanning on site at the Festival venue, Kelmarsh Hall - a graceful 18th century historic house, set in beautiful gardens and surrounded by its own working estate in the rolling Northamptonshire and Leicestershire countryside. Despite its rural location Kelmarsh Hall is easily accessible, being located less than a mile from Junction 2 of the A14 and only 15 minutes from the M1/ M6 junction.  It is situated on the A508 between Market Harborough and Northampton.

For the hundreds of visitors and spectators who now come to enjoy the Festival atmosphere, there are also opportunities to participate: 'Have a Go' agility to try out their own dogs' aptitude and their own handling skills, and a Companion Dog Show with pedigree and novelty classes, also sponsored by PRO PLAN. Plus of course a wide range of trade stands offering goods for both humans and dogs, all adding to the Festival fun!

Big Walkies A-Z guide for dogs in hot weather

A - Always ensure that your dog has a supply of water.

B - Be aware of keeping your dog cool when on car journeys together e.g. leave a window open for fresh air and stop regularly to check your animal. If you want to take your dog with you on a car journey and make sure that your destination is dog-friendly.

C - Carry water with you when out on hot days, and give your dog frequent small amounts.

D - Dogs can get sunburned too – particularly those with light-coloured noses or light-coloured fur on their ears. Ask your vet for advice on pet-safe sunscreen.

E - Exercise - even when it is hot. Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening. Never allow your dog to exercise excessively in hot weather.

F – Feeding - Give the meals at cooler times of the day e.g. morning and evening.

G - Give your dog 10% less food than normal.

H – Hair cut - Give long haired dogs a short clip.

I – Ice - try putting ice cubes in your dog’s water bowl to keep it cool.

J – Jogging with your dog – avoid this in hot weather.

K – Keep your dog in the shade. Never leave a dog in a sunny place with no shade. Never leave your dog in a glass conservatory or a caravan. Even if it is cloudy when you leave, the sun may come out later in the day and make it unbearably hot. Your dog should always be able to move into a cooler, ventilated environment if he/she is feeling hot. If you have to leave your dog outside, you must provide a cool shady spot where he/she can escape from the sun at all times of the day.

L – Long walks – avoid long walks in hot weather.

M – Making sure you know the signs of a dog overheating. Any exercise will make him pant but watch for when the panting becomes "heaving" this is the earliest sign that he is getting too hot. When the panting has become loud and is becoming a "roar" he has already become too hot and the outcome can be fatal.

N - Never leave a dog in a car.

O – Older dogs - Older dogs and dogs which are overweight need extra care in the hot weather as they can overheat a lot quicker and may be less tolerant to the heat and less able to regulate their body temperature.

P – Paddling pools! Paddling/shallow pools can help a dog to cool down and many dogs enjoy access to one. Don’t leave a dog with access to a pool unsupervised and make sure the dog can get out of the pool easily.

Q – Quick thinking – If you think that your dog is overheating call your local vet immediately.

R – Running - In very hot, humid weather, never exercise dogs by cycling while they try to keep up or by running them while you jog. Dogs will collapse before giving up, at which point it may be too late to save them. They can quickly become severely overheated, and an “exercise” session can turn into a medical emergency.

S – Stay alert - Keep an eye on all outdoor dogs. Make sure that they have adequate water and shelter. If you see a dog in distress, contact the RSPCA right away and give the dog immediate relief by providing water.

T - Take your dog for a cool swim rather than a walk.

U – Umbrellas - A carefully placed umbrella or a leafy tree can provide ample shade or make sure a cosy porch is well ventilated and out of direct sunlight.

V – Vets – keep your vets number to hand. This is technically just for when it’s warm, at all times your should have access to your vets number.

W - When walking your dog you need to take note of the surface that your dog is treading on. Certain kinds of pavement asphalt and sand can burn your dog’s paws if really hot. Try the surface with your hand; if it’s too hot for you to place your hand, its way too hot for your dog’s paw pads.

X – eXercising your rights…. (Yes I cheated a little with X!) If you see a dog in a parked car when the weather is hot, note the car’s details including colour, registration number and model.  Note where it is parked then call the police on 999. If the car is in a shop’s car park, ask the shop to put out a notice asking the owner to return to their car.  If the owner does not quickly come forward, call the police immediately. Do not leave until the dog is safe.

Y - You can get a dog jacket that keeps him cool. Some pet shops and online stores stock jackets that have specially made layers of fabric that trap in cool water and reflect light. Great if you take your dog sailing or on long walks, where he may be exposed to long hours of sunlight.

Z – Zzzzzz, dogs sleep a lot in hot weather, but if you are concerned about your dog call a vet immediately.
